Thyroidectomy
What is a Thyroidectomy?
A thyroidectomy is a procedure that is undergone when all other options have been exhausted for somebody with a thyroid disorder. A thyroidectomy is a severe procedure that requires the surgeon to cut the throat open vertically and removes a portion or sometimes even the entire thyroid gland. It is not a painless procedure to say the least. Once you have been through the entire process you have to recover for weeks or sometimes even months depending on how well your particular body recovers.
This image shows a persons throat cut open so the surgeons can access the thyroid gland.
There is no pretty way to perform the surgery.
Thyroidectomy Described
The procedure is costly and the consequences of the procedure aren’t always as rewarding as desired. Afterward the individual still might even have to (and most have to) take medications and watch their diet closely to regulate their weight and thyroid hormone production. Most people go through with the procedure because they haven’t looked well enough into every possible alternative.
